Poor Blazer
Today is not a happy day in our household. Hubby didn’t make it to work this morning. He got to the North Carolina side of Hwy 107 and hit black ice. He fishtailed about 6 or 7 times and almost made it out of the ice clear, but he hit the bottom of the hill and couldn’t do anything but let the Blazer slide into the rock wall.
Yes, Tim if you’re reading this, that’s one thing I HATE about North Carolina. A lot of the mountain roads aren’t banked. A lot of them have a sharp drop off while the other majority is a rock wall, especially going up 107.
He had no choice but to hit the rock wall, and it basically demolished the whole left rear side of the Blazer. The back glass is busted out, the side window is busted out, the bumper is a wreck as well as is the tailgate. Just click on the photo of hubby to see more damage, but the one to the right shows all the limestone deposits that are still embedded in the truck.
It’s still drivable, so he went on to the job site where he was going to call our insurance agent, but when he got to the community they wouldn’t allow any workers in the gate because of the ice. His boss didn’t even call anyone this morning to tell them they couldn’t work, so he drove all the way up there and wrecked my Blazer only to discover he couldn’t even get in the gate! What a great boss! When he called his boss to let him know they couldn’t get into th subdivision his boss was still in bed at 9 am!
On the way back down the mountain he almost slid in the same curve again even though he was creeping through knowing what was there, and he barely missed sideswiping another car that was sitting in the ditch in a crumpled heap after sliding down the limestone wall. There were a total of 4 cars off the sides of the road in the ditch in that one corner not counting ours. Where were the salt trucks? The one truck he saw was sitting at the local diner where they stopped to get breakfast.
And to top it all off, this happens 6 days before Christmas. You know what that means? There is no way in hell to get a repair right now. We’ve checked with every Blue Ribbon Certified repair shop in our area, and so far the soonest we can get it into the shop is the 2nd week in January. What could be better than that? (yes feel the sarcasm) Our full coverage policy doesn’t cover a rental car for single car accidents unless we pay for it as an extra service. I opted to pay the $10/month for the loss of use coverage, and now it’s mysteriously disappeared from our policy!
Do I feel screwed? Upside down and sideways! At least I’ll have plenty of time to come up with the $500 deductible, but I hate being without my car for this long. Luckily my dad has a truck and a Tracker, so we can borrow the Tracker until we get the Blazer back.

Oh, shit, hon. I’m so sorry! I’m glad your hubby’s okay though, and that he was able to get home safely. That really sucks!!
Dang girl…that is wow, no words to really describe it. I sat here reading it with my mouth wide open in disbelief. I am so glad that Ben is ok and didn’t go over the other side. I know how the mountains of NC can be. You can always replace a vehicle but never the ones you love.
