Preparing Charity Donations
A friend of mine asked me what I was doing today, and I told her I spent a lot of time yesterday pulling out a ton of clothes I’m giving to Goodwill. Some of them smell like smoke though, and some of them have been packed up so they’ve got that “storage smell”. I figured I’d take today to wash them all before delivering them all to Goodwill this week.
My friend asked why in the world I was washing them all just to give them away. I just can’t stand the thought of giving someone something that isn’t 100% clean. I can’t even pull something out of storage and wear it myself with that smell, so why should I give it away like that?
I talked to a few other friends to find out what they do, and they all agreed they just bag their stuff up and take it to the drop off location. None of them make sure everything is clean before giving it away! The consensus seems to be none of them want to spend the money to wash all those clothes.
Um…you can get a 30 load box of Purex for $2 at Walmart?
Am I the only person who washes clothes before sending them to a charity?
I’m sorry, but I want to give away clean clothes…even if it’s just a case of they smell bad from storage. I don’t want someone getting something that smells bad!
I started thinking about all the times I’ve shopped at Goodwill. There have been plenty of times I’ve found clothes on the rack that were obviously dirty. Is it because the clothes get dirty while the employees are sorting them and putting them on racks or is it because people don’t care enough to wash their clothes before they give them away?

No, you’re not alone I wash everything too. The very idea of donating dirty clothes to a charity grosses me out badly.
I don’t care if it takes me a week to wash, dry, fold, and bag it all, they will be clean when I drop them off.
If you’re seeing dirty clothes at Goodwill it’s because they’re dirty when they’re brought in. Goodwill here doesn’t do anything more than sort the stuff and price tag it before putting it out on the racks.
I always wash stuff before giving it to Goodwill. I can’t stand the thought of giving it away if it’s dirty.
