A Great Independence Day
I knew I shouldn’t have complained earlier about having to drag myself out of bed to go to the cookout. I ended up having so much fun. We opted to skip my family’s BBQ since I’m still having “issues” with my mom, but we did go to the little BBQ my in laws threw together.
It ended up just being the immediate family, Hubby’s parents, sisters, and older sis-in-law’s boy toy friend, Joe. Yes, Joe, that’s what ya get for picking on me all evening.
We were running so late that I opted to just stop by the gas station to grab a couple 2 liters instead of hitting up the grocery store for something store bought to take. I’m glad I did. My MIL made so much food her fridge is still packed, and my older SIL/BFF showed up with a super awesome cheesecake. She knows she had me at cheesecake.
After dinner we just chilled out. We sat outside under the Coleman Screen House just talking and having fun. It would have been perfect if I’d had a hammock chair to relax in. My MIL then decided to take their dog, Buddy, for a walk around the block, so Hubby and I joined her to walk off the food we’d just ate.
By the time we got back we were burning up, so we ended up jumping in the pool even though I hadn’t planned on it. I didn’t take a swimsuit, so I had to borrow one from the SIL…didn’t fit too well. I’m pretty sure I stretched out the bikini top so much she won’t be able to wear it for a while…she’s only 13 and still “growing”.
We weren’t planning on shooting fireworks either since we’re in such a drought, but while we were in the pool it started raining. The ground got enough of a soaking for my FIL to deem it safe enough for smaller fireworks….the kinds that stay on the ground and give out a pretty little light show, so Hubby and I ran up town and grabbed some fireworks.
Of course, even though my FIL said nothing that goes up in the air, we couldn’t resist. It being about an hour before dark, everything was on sale. We picked up 4 boxes of 6 shot mortar rounds for $20! We also got about $30 worth of the smaller light show stuff, and of course I had to have my sparklers!
Stupid me walked out of the house without my camera, so I didn’t get to take any photos of my own. I played around with my little SIL’s 5mp camera though, adjusting the shutter speed until I got a few pretty good shots. Hopefully she’ll let me snitch that SD card to grab the pics tomorrow.
My MIL also had this really cool Japanese lantern firework thing. You hung it from the tree, lit it, and it spun out in this awesome light show. When it was done you had a hanging lantern with a flame burning on the inside. I got a few crappy photos of it with my cell phone, so I’ll share those as soon as I get them off my phone.
We ended up saving one of the boxes of mortar rounds. I want to wait until it’s really dark tomorrow night, then I want to shoot them off while I play with my camera. I’m hoping to get a few good pics.
