NC Please Give Me My Money

Filled Under: Financial, Rant

I’m a little ill at North Carolina right now. Since Hubby works in NC a majority of our tax refund always comes from NC. Sometimes we’ll receive a small (less than $50) refund from SC, but most of the time NC is our only refund check. We always end up paying mucho dollars to the feds.

Well this year our NC check was supposed to be direct deposited by April 3rd. As of today we still haven’t received it. Now the issue is something I should have probably known about sooner, but I don’t tend to keep up with any political type news from NC. Apparently NC is holding our tax returns because they claim they don’t have the cash to issue them or they’re using our cash as an interest free loan while they wait on their own rebate or something like that.

The stories we’re hearing are all different, but everything leads to the same issue…they’re holding our checks. All I can say is if the states were more careful about not wasting cash maybe they wouldn’t end up in situations like this. If this happens to citizens like us, we pile up a bunch of debt, our options are debt consolidation or bankruptcy. You didn’t see the government handing me a huge interest free loan when I was signing up for debt consolidation.

They’ve got a website up where you can check the status of your refund, but it doesn’t really give much info. I input our info, and I received a generic “Your tax return has been received and is in process.

It wouldn’t be such a big deal to me if I didn’t really need this cash right now. Actually I needed this cash when it was due to me as I was afraid I was going to need it to pay our federal taxes. Luckily I was able to come up with an extra $300 to cover the portion I was missing, but it put us behind on a few bills.

Now I’ve been checking my bank account daily waiting for the refund to show so I can hopefully make up for having to fall a month behind on my cable and phone bills. As usual I was robbing Peter to pay Paul, and now Paul isn’t getting paid. Oh well, it’ll work out. It always does, and I shouldn’t have put myself in the position to need to cut it so tight anyway. I shouldn’t have counted on that money to come in when it was supposed to.

Luckily we won’t have this issue next year as Hubby has gone completely contracted instead of half self employed and half employed by his boss. I like it better that way because even though we technically pay all of his taxes instead of his boss paying half, we have the opportunity for more tax write offs, and I can better handle his tax payments aka I can make sure they get paid quarterly, and I can try to work it out so we either owe a little or break even.

I’d much rather owe the government a little come tax time instead of allowing them to basically use our own cash as their own interest free loan. It’s our money, and I’d rather have it now instead of waiting months for it to show up.
