Too Much Spam

Recently I changed my anti-spam plugin as Akismet was still letting through way more spam comments than I would like. I thought I’d give something else a try to see if I could find anything that I liked better. A few blogging friends recommended I try WP-Spamfree, so I installed it and let it get to work. I’ve been running this plugin for a few weeks now, and the bottom line is I don’t like it at all. I’m seeing way more spam now than I was before, and with my limited online time I just don’t have the time to sit here sorting through spam comments.

I’m heading back to Akismet for now, but I’ll be checking out other spam filtering plugins as I have time. I’m open to any recommendations as I really don’t have a clue which one I want to try next. If you have a great anti-spam plugin running on your blog feel free to share your results with me.

As you’ve probably also noticed I changed my theme again, but I’m having some problems with this one.  I’m going to try to spend some time working with it today, but if I can’t fix it I guess I’ll be returning to my old theme until I have the time to either make one or find one that I really like.  I just feel like my old theme has too generic.  Hopefully I’ll be able to come up with something I really like soon, but I’m so picky that I’m having a hard time finding that perfect fit.

  1. This isn’t a full-fledged spam filter, but it’s cool to have because it will block repeated spammers from the same IP. It’s called Three Strikes & You’re Out, and you can check it out here:

I moderate comments, setting it so that they are unmoderated after I approve their first comment. Sometimes someone will leave a nice comment at first, and then turn into a troll. I had a guy do this on one of my blogs. When I marked the rude comment as spam, he came back, I marked that one as spam, he came back again, spam, and that was the end of him. It’s a very useful plugin if you have repeated trolls and spammers. Give it a try!
