Thoughts on Tomatoes

How is the tomato recall affecting you? Do you think some of the larger franchise restaurants and stores that pulled tomatoes completely off their shelves were wrong to do so? Apparently some experts are thinking these places overreacted. Personally, I appreciate the fact that they pulled them. I hardly eat tomatoes, but I want to know if I do get a burger with a tomato I’m not going to get sick.

Luckily for us we don’t eat many store bought fruits and veggies at all in the summer. If we do it’s because I have frozen veggies left over that I need to use. I have what I consider a black thumb, but my grandparents and my dad have gardens that produce way more than they can eat. My Grandpa and my Dad both plant completely organic gardens, so I feel save eating what they produce.

Of course now that I can’t find a tomato anywhere I’m craving a tomato sandwich! My Grandma called me this morning wanting to know if I knew of anyone who wanted a few tomato plants. She planted a pack of seeds that didn’t seem to do anything, so she planted another pack in starter trays. Now both packs are thriving, so she has tomato plants out her ears.

Even if I knew I could keep them alive I wouldn’t take them. It’s not that I don’t want them, it’s just that last year my Grandpa planted tomatoes in the garden behind my house. He had so many tomatoes they were rotting before we could get them all. If I wanted a tomato all I had to do was walk a few feet past my back porch to grab one.

From what my Grandma was telling me it’s going to be the same this year, so now I have to see if I can find someone who wants any of these extra plants. I know I can give a few to my mother in law, but she doesn’t really have anywhere to plant them.

Lab Results

I finally got in touch with the doctor today about my test results, and I’m not happy.  My culture came back inconclusive because it was contaminated in the lab!  Now I have to go back down there to have another culture.  I had another one of these things come up in the normal area where I get them last night, so he should be able to get a good result this time as long as they don’t contaminate it!

Use Your Blog To Connect

I don’t have severe health problems like a lot of my blogging friends do, but now I can relate to them in a small way understanding exactly why it is they feel the need to blog about their health problems.

It helps them to feel like they are not alone in this world with the issues they face on a daily basis.  It gives them a chance to connect with other people experiencing the same problems, and it also gives them a place to vent about what’s going on with the illness.

When I finally decided to write my post about the boils I’ve dealt with for years I knew it was going to be something gross that a lot of people wouldn’t want to read about.  I finally just needed a place to vent because it’s not exactly something I want to talk about with my family and friends.  When I have discussed it with people before I’ve always gotten weird looks and then treated like something was seriously wrong with me.

Since writing the post I’ve been overwhelmed by the number of emails from other people who are experiencing the same thing.  Most of them have been trying to get a diagnosis for years while others never really thought about it as something could be wrong with them.

Most of the people who have contacted me are women, some of them people I already know and connect to through blogging, and I’ve also had a few men email me.  One guy has been so worried because he thought he might have an STD.  He’s been afraid to go to the doctor about it, and now he’s scheduled an appointment because he has connected with someone who can talk to him about his issues and help him deal with the element of fear.

All those emails have proven to me that sometimes the best way to find your own support group is to write about it.  Other people will share their own experiences with you, and together you can all connect and help each other through it.

Back From The Doc

Bleh.  Today is such a hot, humid, boring day!  When I say hot I mean hot.  Half the country’s dealing with this heat wave right now, and I so wasn’t ready for it to be in the high 90’s this week!

I drug myself out this morning to Urgent Care to see the doc about these bump things.  I printed out some of the info I found and took it with me.  I’d say it helped because he was kind of hesitant at first about doing the culture, but I basically told him I wanted it no matter what.  I’d rather get have it done and it come back ok than not have it done and find out I should have.  I should hear something on that in about 3 days.

For now I’m back on oral antibiotics, and I’ve got an antibiotic cream to use.   I’m really impressed with the Staphaseptic.  We’ve been using it instead of Neosporin for a few months now, and I have to say I love it.  I’m not wild about the smell, but I got past that pretty easily.  Normally when one of these things pops up it takes days to get to the point where it will drain.  After putting the Staphaseptic on it religiously yesterday, it’s already starting to heal up.  The swelling has gone down tremendously, and it’s not super red and irritated looking anymore.

+1 for Staphaseptic!

Other than my trip to the doc this morning I’ve been lazy all day.  It’s just too hot to do anything, and I haven’t been to sleep yet.  I’m trying to keep myself awake until at least 7pm so I can totally flip my schedule again.  I’m trying to keep myself awake by playing around in Paint Shop Pro, but now I’m just getting bored with it.  I spent most of the night learning how to do photo makeovers.  I’ll post a result or two in a minute.
