Woot Off Not Looking So Hot

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Well there’s a Woot Off in full swing right now, and I’ve been keeping tabs on it all night.  Normally I can’t wait for the next Woot Off because I know there’s going to be something I want to buy, even if it’s not something I need.

So far though I haven’t seen one single thing this time that I was even remotely interested in buying.  Either I’m not in the mood for useless junk because I really know how badly I don’t need to blow cash on crap right now or there really hasn’t been anything worth buying.  Sadly I’d say it’s because everything tonight has been crap.

I’m still holding out for a printer though.  Maybe they’ll throw a really good 3 in 1 up for a really cheap price.  I can only wish.

Dealing With Email Scams

We got our power back late this afternoon, but I just haven’t had the motivation to stop by my blog for a minute.

When the power came back on I did my usual. I loaded up Thunderbird to download my mail, then I walked away because I knew there would be hundreds of emails waiting to be read. Actually, there were close to 500, but that’s because I’m in a lot of Yahoo and Google groups. Those emails can wait until later.

I wasn’t looking forward to the over abundance of spam either, but there was plenty of it mixed in with my regular mail. I’m getting so sick of this. I’ve never had a big problem with spam on my 2 main email accounts, but in the past couple of weeks I’ve received probably close to 50 or 60 spam messages a day per account.

Charter has a pretty decent spam filter, but it doesn’t catch everything. Thunderbird’s spam filter normally picks up what Charter doesn’t, but lately a ton of spam has slipped through. Why? Because these are your typical spam messages trying to sell you discount prescrips and junk like that.

This week I’ve been slammed with a ton of scam emails. I think I’ve spent more time reporting these scams than I have actually emailing people back. Here’s an example of one of the scam messages I received.

Seriously, how do people fall for crap like that? Doesn’t the fact that they ask for extensive information for each account ring those big warning bells inside everyone’s heads? Even if the scammer didn’t ask for such extensive information, my warning bells would have been triggered by the horrible grammar and spelling.

What’s unfortunate is that so many people do fall for scams like this all the time, and if they didn’t work there wouldn’t be a ton of scammers out there still sending these types of messages. I shit you not I’ve received and reported at least 50 or 60 of these emails every day for the last couple of weeks.

Other than reporting these emails, I’ve decided the only thing I can really do to avoid having to delete tons of messages like this is to switch which email address I use for my regular mail. I’ve got a plethora of accounts to choose from, so I’ll be sending out an email to everyone once I decide which one I’m going to use.

Oh BTW, if you do receive emails that look similar to the one above please report it! Here are a couple of places to report scams and fraud.

togoodtobetrue.com- You’ll find a ton of information about scams as well as a list of places to report scams and fraud.

Fraud Watch International- In my opinion this is the easiest way to report scams. Just forward a copy of the message to scams@fraudwatchinternational.com. They investigate each report.

Long Live The MP3 Player

Oh before I grab some breakfast let me mention that the new mp3 player is awesome! It’s double the size of my old one, but the controls are sooooooo much easier to use. I haven’t found myself hitting the wrong button once. Long die the mini joystick! This one has a nice button to replace it.

Right now I’m testing the battery. Both the Sandisk MX1 that I had and this Sandisk Sansa m230 use a AA battery instead of charging it like the iPod, and I actually prefer that. If my battery dies while we’re riding I can stash fresh ones under the bike seat. I’ve had this one going since about 12:30 testing, and so far I’ve still got a full battery.

I’ll do a full review of it on Informal Critique sometime over the next few days, so keep an eye out for that. Seriously for $19.95 at Amazon.com this little sucker is a great buy. It’s an even better buy when you pick 2 of em up for $20 like I did from Woot.

I just wish this one had come with the protective case like my other one did, but for $10 I’m not complaining. I can grab a silicone case for it for $10.

The Good News:

I’m not on the verge of crying anymore. I don’t know what that was all about, but I watched a movie, and the feeling went away.

The Bad News:
My all natural laundry soap still hasn’t arrived, and I’m out of clean clothes that haven’t been washed in regular detergent. I had to wash my bath robe with Purex earlier tonight because Alley puked on it. I pulled it out of the dryer fresh and warm, took a shower, and here I am 10 minutes later breaking out and itching all over again. I’m going to pick up a small bottle of All Free & Clear tomorrow to have on hand as my backup, and I shot an email to my laundry soap lady to see why it hasn’t arrived yet.

I’ve ordered from her plenty of times before, and yes it does normally take a couple weeks to get here, but this is going on 3 weeks. I know there’s no way she wouldn’t send it, so I shot her an email to make sure it didn’t get lost in shipping. It could very easily be delayed.

For some reason my Woot order has been delayed. It’s been stuck in Charlotte since the 25th and is marked for delivery on Feb. 2nd. Why I don’t know, but I’ve learned to live by the old Woot forums rule. Buy it, forget about it, and by the time it arrives it’s like opening a present because you can’t remember what you ordered! I actually HAD forgotten about my Woot order until hubby asked me about it today. I picked up 2 512mb Sandisk Sansa MP3 players for $20. Those are totally going in my gift drawer as I’m sure they’ll each make nice birthday presents for someone. If I like the controls on these better than my old school Sandisk I might just use one for myself and pass my old one along to someone else…

or give it away as a blog contest. We’ll just have to see. I don’t know if anyone would be interested in winning it because it’s Sandisk MX1 and it’s only a 512mb although that’s plenty big enough for me. You can check out the review I wrote about it here. Mine is the blue one. Hubby has the red one which is a 256mb, but he loves it.

Finally Installed Ubuntu

I’ve been taking some time today to set my new computer up the way I want it.  I originally installed Windows for hubby’s sake because I’ve got his computer torn down at the moment.  I kind of snitched his sound card until mine comes in later this week.  *evil grin*

I went ahead and did something I’ve been wanting to do for awhile.  I dual booted Linux on this pc.  Now I can mainly use Ubuntu for myself, and when I want to play one of my Sims games or someone needs to use my pc I can boot back over to Windows.  I’m going to install Ubuntu on my laptop, but since I haven’t used Ubuntu before I’ll be able to really get the hang of it before going soley Linux on the laptop.

If I’m MIA for awhile over the next couple of days you can probably guess I’m playing around in Linux trying to figure out a few more things.
