So Warm Today
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!
Man it’s nice here today, but I’m cooped up inside working. I have a huge data entry job today that’s going to take hours to complete, but hey I’m not complaining. It’s worth a lot of money! I just wish I had my laptop running on the network so I could be sitting outside enjoying the sunshine. It’s 80 degrees out right now.
The thing that really sucks is our AC isn’t working. We went to turn on the window unit, and nothing happened. Hubby’s going to hook up our backup unit today to see if it works, but if it doesn’t we’re going to have to go shopping. This house is getting warm, and I’m not staying in here like this! I have two floor fans going, but I’m going to have to take the 3rd outside in a bit for a good wash. It’s caked with dust from sitting in storage.
I’m just taking a quick late lunch break right now, then I’m back to data entry!
Home Business Window Sign
I had a customer today ask me why I don’t have a sign in my yard or on my window advertising my home business. First of all I admit it can get a little confusing for some of my new customers.
Sometimes they have trouble finding my house because I don’t have a sign, and when they get here they have a trouble figuring out which door to use. That’s because this is an old house that was once a duplex, so we have two doors on the front of the house. One leads into what is supposed to be the formal living room that I use for my office, and the other leads into the guest bedroom.
Sometimes I’ll have customers knock on both doors because they don’t know where to go. Recently I started sticking a sign I printed out quickly on the one door that says “use other door”, but that’s all I’ve got as far as signs go. There’s nothing officially showing my business name, and that’s something I would like to have.
I realized I can buy vinyl window signs from VistaPrint for as low as $11.99, so that’s something I’m really thinking about doing. I could put it on the window in the room I use as my office, so it would give my customers a better idea of where to go. Then I could order one of those signs that hangs from the mailbox like I’ve seen other home businesses use. Then my customers would have no problem at all finding the house.
What would be even better would be my own little building separate from the house, like the huge unattached garage we have, but my Grandpa can’t even convince my Grandma to clean her junk out of it to give him room for his lawnmowers, so I doubt I’ll ever be lucky enough to convert that to my business space. Besides, I like the setup I have now since I work all ours of the day and night, and the window signs are removable. That means I could take it down when I’m not open for business or when we’ve got something going on here like holiday celebrations, etc.
Best of all, I can either choose to create my own logo design or I can use VistaPrint’s design template to create a sign within minutes. It’s something I’m definitely going to check into.
It’s Snowing
I tried to sleep in pretty late this morning since I stayed up half the night waiting for some photos of Hubby riding this weekend to be posted. I gave up about 3am and decided it was just too cold to stay awake any longer.
Here I am already used to the warm weather and we get hit with this cold front. I was laying in bed at 9am trying to make myself go back to sleep just a little bit longer when Hubby text me. I figured he was going to ask if any more of his pics where up, but not. His text said “It’s snowing!”
They just stopped what they were doing to watch while it snowed for about an hour because snow in April in our area just doesn’t normally happen. Me, I’m just ready for the cold to move out again. I’ve gotten to used to the idea that it’s Spring with sunshine and warm weather!
Good News!
Wow I’ve had so much going on today/tonight that I totally forgot to tell you the good news! You know how I said Hubby came home from work yesterday really upset because he had to basically have a talk with the boss and have two guys fired from his crew? It really upset him because he’s one of those people who can’t stand for anyone to be mad at him for any reason even if the person deserved what happened to them. He’s still adjusting to all of the responsibility that comes along with being the guy in charge.
Well, he was definitely rewarded for it. When he got to work this morning the boss called a meeting with him, and the results are that Hubby got a raise! His boss basically said he’s never had his crews run as efficiently as they are now with Hubby in charge.
Hubby makes sure everyone is doing their job and not just f’ing around like they want to do. He runs a tight ship and demands quality over anything else from his guys. That’s why their company only builds 2-5 houses a year at most. They’re multi million dollar homes, and quality is the number one priority.
He got another $1 on the hour, and his boss said if he keeps things running as smoothly as they are now, he can expect another .50 or $1 after every house they finish this year. They’ve currently got another 2 houses scheduled for this year, and they’re almost finished with the one they’re on now.
Every time my mom complains about the fact that she thinks Hubby should quit his job because it’s too far to drive, I remind her that there is no way he’d be making the same money around here. Around here lead carpenters with 20 years experience can barely find someone to pay them $10-15/hour. Hubby’s blessed to have found such a great job with such a great boss, and the fact that he makes extremely great pay is just an added bonus!
He Brought It Home With Him
Hubby had a horrible day at work today. He came home extremely upset because he basically had to fire two guys. He didn’t do the firing, but he was the one with all of the information.
See he’s the crew leader, and he’s basically 2nd in command to the boss when it comes to their job site. If something is wrong it’s his job to fix it. He’s got two guys that were taking pills on the job. Of course it was seriously causing problems with their work, and it was making an already dangerous job site even more dangerous. You can’t have two guys messed up on pills operating saws.
He had a talk with the boss about it yesterday, and the boss had a talk with the two guys telling them basically they were walking on thin ice and if they came to work messed up again they were gone. I’m surprised he even gave them another chance, but he did. This morning one of the guys showed up ranting and raving getting in hubby’s face accusing him of ratting him out. Everyone on the crew made it a point to tell the guy that everyone of them said something to the boss. Even the two electricians from another company called their boss to complain about him. Dude shouldn’t have been doing drugs of any kind on the job site in the first place!
So this guy started picking fights with everyone on the crew, and it turned into a big mess. Two of their best guys quit because they said they couldn’t work with this guy. After 3 hours on the phone with the boss and the two other guys the situation was finally worked out. The pill poppers are fired, and the other two guys agreed not to quit, but it made it an extremely rough day for hubby.
What does all that mean? He carried the attitude home with him, and he’s been on my case about everything and anything all evening and night. His temper is riled up good, and I’m doing everything I can to avoid him for the time being.
